Back on his feet: a young Colombian’s fight to walk like everyone else

At 3 months of age, Jaime Carvajalino lost his feet in a surreal way: a pig pulled him from the bed in which he slept and tried to eat him. Although his feet did not come off, they were undone and had to be amputated at two different heights, and even though he received his first prosthetic feet at the early age of nine months old, these have not always been with him.

When he was 12 years old, he started crafting pairs of homemade prosthetics for himself with the plastic containers of the pesticides used in the rice fields and the soles of rubber boots his brothers would dispose of.

In 2018, after years of only using his homemade prosthetics, he finally managed to acquire a brand-new set of professionally built ones, an event that brought joy to Jaime and ultimately changed his life. However, after receiving his new pair of feet in Bogota, he returned to his village and found out soon that these new high end and precise prosthetics are not suitable for the hard labors of the jobs that, with much effort and difficulty, he finds in the area.

Colombia’s toughest military training occurs in the Amazon

For 10 weeks, nearly 130 soldiers travel through inhospitable landscapes of Colombia and face extreme tests of survival and dexterity in the international Lanceros (rangers) course of the Colombian Army, one of the most respected in the world and attended by soldiers from more than 20 other countries to certify themselves as the strongest mentally and physically members of the military, capable of executing high-level operations in adverse conditions. The final stretch of the training takes place in the Amazon jungle, where these men must carry out extensive marches with their equipment on their shoulders, survive in difficult conditions, test their physical prowess and even simulate a kidnapping rescue.

The Yukpa: an invisible people to Colombians

In the remote Serranía del Perijá, the Yukpa—an Indigenous people straddling the Colombia–Venezuela border—are fighting for survival against the combined forces of state neglect, environmental collapse, and the slow erosion of their ancestral lands. Displaced over decades by colonization, agricultural expansion, mining, and armed conflict, many now live in arid highlands with little access to clean water or arable soil. Widespread malnutrition, disease, and polluted rivers—worsened by glyphosate spraying and the advance of palm and coal industries—have left their health and livelihoods in crisis, while government pledges to restore and expand their territory remain largely unfulfilled.

Yet the Yukpa endure. Women keep the community’s oral history and cultural traditions alive, while children—playing, laughing, and learning in their native language—carry the fragile hope of a people facing the threat of cultural extinction. Between armed groups and a vanishing ecosystem, they continue their decades-long struggle, demanding not charity, but the recognition and restitution of their rights to live, farm, and thrive on their ancestral land.

Life as carnival

Every February, Barranquilla takes on an extraordinary rhythm. Beyond Avenida 40—where for more than a century the main events of its famed carnival have unfolded—the streets of this Colombian coastal city transform into a stage for vibrant scenes, where daily life is infused with the color, sparkle, and joy of the parades. The carnival groups of the Barranquilla Carnival, one of the main cultural festivals in Colombia, are artistic manifestations represented by nearly 500 folklore groups with a defined theme and which perform specifically in this celebration held every year, four days before Ash Wednesday. There are tradition carnival groups, inspired by costumes, dances and popular tradition customs, and there are fantasy carnival groups, a product of the imagination, originality and creativity of their authors.

Catatumbo: guerra silenciosa

Catatumbo: Silent War

Catatumbo, a region in northeastern Colombia, in the department of Norte de Santander and bordering Venezuela, is experiencing a crisis marked by armed violence, state abandonment, and the control of illegal economies. The conflict between the ELN guerrilla and dissident factions of the FARC guerrilla has turned this area into a scene of killings, forced displacement, and constant threats against civilians. The war has also paralyzed the local economy, imposed invisible borders between communities, and militarized public spaces, transforming everyday life into an environment of control and permanent fear. Many communities survive under fear, without security guarantees or adequate access to basic services. In addition, drug trafficking continues to fuel the conflict and strengthen the armed groups seeking to dominate the territory.

Bogotá: Fashion in Motion

Every year, in late November, Bogota takes on a different rhythm. The city transforms into a living corridor of runways, workshops, retail routes, and creative encounters that place fashion at the center. Over several days, Bogota Fashion Week activates an ecosystem where designers, entrepreneurs, and emerging talents connect with diverse audiences. More than a showcase, it is a platform that strengthens local identity, energizes the industry, and positions the Colombian capital as a key hub for creation, business, and international projection in Latin American fashion.

Plastic Pollution

Maicao, a border city in Colombia near Venezuela, is a plastic desert. The sheer number of plastic bags covering its streets, lots, and roads -like fields of cotton- reflects the intense commercial activity that defines the city. However, there is another reason: fuel smugglers use up to seven plastic bags to seal the bottles in which they transport gasoline, and then discard them along the roadside.

Illegal Gold Mining

Illegal gold mining in Chocó has become one of Colombia’s main criminal economies, driven by its high profitability compared to drug trafficking. Armed groups such as the ELN and the Clan del Golfo control vast areas, where they exploit open-pit deposits, often in protected zones. According to reports, around 69 % of this activity is illicit and concentrated in regions such as Chocó, Antioquia, and Bolívar.

The illegal extraction of this mineral not only finances armed groups but also causes severe environmental damage and public health risks, including deforestation and mercury contamination. It also highlights the weak presence of the state in strategic territories, where gold becomes a driver of violence, ecological degradation, and illegal economies.

Illegal Timber Trade

Timber trafficking is degrading the forests of Colombia, one of the most biodiverse countries. It is estimated that illegal logging accounts for approximately 10 % of national deforestation and nearly 47 % of the country’s timber that originates in natural forests comes from a clandestine origin.

Illicitly logging, transporting, processing and commercializing trees is common in the Pacific and Amazon, regions where 75 % of Colombian forests are located. There, illegal actors and criminal networks log endangered tree species, in prohibited areas and quantities.

As they move through these territories, they exploit the civilian population, so that when police operations occur (such as the one shown in the photos, which took place in the city of Buenaventura, on Colombia’s Pacific coast, in May 2022), it is civilians who end up facing the legal consequences of these activities.

Colombia’s Social Uprising (2019–2021)

Between 2019 and 2021, Colombia experienced one of the most intense periods of social mobilization in its recent history, known as the social uprising.

What began as a response to tax and education reforms quickly turned into a massive expression of discontent over structural inequality, economic precarity, and lack of opportunities, tensions that were further deepened by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Across the country, the streets were filled with diverse voices: students, workers, Indigenous communities, feminist collectives, and citizens in general who found in protest a space to make long-standing demands visible. This process was marked by intense episodes of confrontation, unrest, and allegations of police abuse, as well as the deaths of protesters in different parts of the country.

Seizure

Five days before traveling to Spain for a semester abroad, in January 2022, my sister María José (30 years old, Bogotá) had her first seizure. Within hours, that isolated episode turned into an unrelenting series of seizures that led to an induced coma, months of deep sedation, and a hospitalization that lasted eight months. What followed after she returned home was just as devastating: six months of psychotic episodes during which Majo ceased to be herself.

These episodes resulted in multiple readmissions to the hospital, prolonging the uncertainty and the physical and emotional toll on our entire family.

Amid the lack of medical answers, my family did not turn only to science in search of an explanation. We also turned to religion to try to make sense of what was happening; in our desperation, we even considered the possibility of an exorcism.

María José’s medical record exceeds 1,000 pages. Dozens of tests and multiple unsuccessful treatments never managed to clearly explain the origin of what she experienced: an acute autoimmune encephalitis that attacked her brain and, at the same time, fractured the life of our entire family.

But this is not just the story of an illness. It is the story of everything an illness carries with it: relationships stretched to the breaking point, others rebuilt; caregivers who devote their lives entirely, like my mother; routines that disappear; and bonds that are forever transformed. It is the invisible cost of survival.

Today, against all odds, María José walks, speaks, reads, writes, studies, and remembers her life almost intact. Her recovery, made possible by an experimental treatment and virtual reality therapy in 2023, challenges what science once thought possible.

According to doctors, her case may be unique. But that is precisely why it needs to be seen. Because what appears exceptional could be happening, right now, somewhere else in the world.

The images accompanying this story were taken almost entirely with cellphone, in the midst of urgency, uncertainty, and the intimacy of the process.
